0.0.0.40 failure

Post by dda »

Since 0.0.0.40 I am getting a failure when I have been using ONE COPY of x2 for many hours! (more than 12 hours). It seems to only occur when I have been opening and closing LOTS of scrap frames, and it always occurs on a drag & drop (into a closed directory).

If I can trap the details for you I'll post it.

Trouble is, when I run Dbmon it never happens. Everything survives EXCEPT 2x.... and the drag & drop HAS completed successfully every time.

Next time it happens I'll grab just the basic assert details for you.

Your problem

Post by zippit »

Sorry.
I don't quite understand what exactly the problem is.Is it a 2x or x2 or both, but try useing an open folder.I prefer equal panes and copy or cut and paste for working with file movement.

Yes. I don't think people visit these forums just to enjoy a rap on their knuckles!

Let's agree to this (self-imposed) code of conduct:

DOs:
1. All users are most welcome to ask ANY question.
** May be already covered in FAQ/Alpha info.
** May be applicable to 2x (not x2)
2. Try to address the MAIN POINT (not other "hidden"/implied things)
3. Post a reply only if we have-
** Additional logical arguments
** Additional observations
** A "vote" to agree/disagree with one of the viewpoints expressed earlier
4. Use our superior knowledge to HELP; not to CRITICISE.

DONTs:
1. Never make it personal- Deal with the ISSUE, not the PERSON
2. Never get tired of a repeated question (provide a link if you want)
3. Never question the experience/IQ/intentions of any member
4. Never imply that the answer was obvious; or unworthy of our attention
5. (Last-but not the least) Never get obnoxious

-------------
P.S. This was in response to certain earlier posts; one of which is edited now to cut out the offensive text..The message is still valid!

Well said narayan.

Nobody knows everything, so presuming a right to criticise people for the gaps in their knowledge equates to delusion regarding the gaps in ones own knowledge...

Is that really how you (and, by association, us) want to be seen?

Perhaps... :)

It's all part of the "disturbing the comfortable" mission... ;)

"it takes all sorts to make a world"
Famous last words?? ;)

Yes, I also support different styles-- and we already have them here.
But offending someone can't be a "style".

* The terse, "Oh God! Not you again!" approach is offensive.
* Repeating some keywords from the original questions with question-marks or unhappy faces is also offensive.
* "Why can't you..." are fighting words, to be avoided.

Even if we provide a correct solution at the end of this treatment, it leaves a sour taste in the visitor's mouth.

This forum is akin to a customer-complaint window: When a "customer" visits that window, he should at least get a warm welcome (if not his solution): So, we serve at this window with a smile or we leave it alone.

Also consider the following:
* The other person may be new to PCs (certainly not his fault)-- you can't gag him for that.
* The person may not know English (Nikos has world-wide clientele); so the communication may not be word-perfect.
* The person might be impaired in other ways; and not able to coimmunicate properly.

Even those persons have a right to represent their problems; and expect a courteous answer.

I am sure visitors appreciate the gentle and compassionate nature of this excellent forum. Let us preserve that. :)

witch one

Post by zippit »

What do i qualify for of those named.
Not this i think,
* The terse, "Oh God! Not you again!" approach is offensive
So why include it ? :?:
Why have Emoticons if i shouldn't use them ? :?: That in itself is an insult to ME.
As to newbie etc, thats my point.Let the original post outline all this.
Not to mention that many don't even reply to the help suggested.

Just because we are volunteering to help here, it does NOT give us a right to be curt with a visitor, even if he is inarticulate and does not match our (arbitrary) "standards".

The visitor should feel welcome on reading our response; not like a gatecrasher. The impatient "out with it! I haven't got whole day for you!" response makes him feel exactly that.

Of course, we can use the emoticons like christmas decoration (we have just seen a demo ;) ), but like words, even the emoticons can hurt people who expected a polite response. So, it's a question of "how"; not "How many"! :)

------

People don't answer for many reasons:
* First of all, they may not expect answers so fast (and that is a fact-- just see how sloppily other forums work); and so they plan to visit the site only after a few weeks.
* They may have only an occasional chance to connect to web
* They may feel that the response is not to the point; and they are waiting for Nikos/others to answer.

We must take a more charitable view of people whom we don't even know.

And even if they don't answer, what of it? That should not imply that they are ungrateful and therefore deserve our contempt!

I think it does and makes this whole idea of a forum a waste of time. With no reply we have not learned what reply helped and worked so we can suggest it again.
