x2 writes the x2tmplist.txt file according to the settings in Tools -> Options -> Advanced Options -> Global (Tab) -> Miscellaneous -> "Paste text in folder saved as unicode file"

Enable that and you get UCS-2 LE, disabling it gets you ANSI.

The next question is why x2 uses UTF2 (or 16) in lieu of the more general (and apparently modern) UTF8.

Off-Topic, it's becoming evident to me that I may need to "get a life".  I wonder if there are any places in Nikos' windsurfing club...

:D Yes, that's the one! And I remember now exactly when I changed it- it was when I asked about user commands item limit and you told me to go to Tools -> Advanced Options (the stand-alone one) -> Global -> Custom Menu Items to increase the limit. Then I saw that some new options were added since v1.8, and pasting text files as Unicode files was one of them.

Thank you!

Options / Properties/Settings / Language
Yes, it is enabled, but I think that the plug-in refers to Unicode filenames and is unrelated to Unicode encoding in a text file.
I guess you are right, Ansi2Unicode only seems to deal with Unicode filenames... I have had problems with IrfanView reading Unicode filelists created by scripts...
