Is there a way to make custom groups work just where I tell them to (using Folder settings > Save) and not everywhere I navigate within the same tab?
Custom groups are awesome, but it quickly becomes annoying when they keep displaying even at levels the user doesn't want to.
So, is there a way to restrict them just to folders that have saved settings?
Custom groups here and there, not everywhere

I suggest an option which allows x2 to behave as it does now or the way I asked before.
If the option is set to keep the old behavior, then it just keeps acting the same, but if the option is set to the new behavior, then whenever x2 doesn't find a desktop.ini with valid (custom groups) data to read from, it just stops (disables) displaying custom groups.

The issue still exists (unless I'm doing it wrong).
Let's say that I have a custom group for image files and I browse to a folder where there are image files and other files.
1. If I activate the custom group in that folder and browse to a different folder, the custom group is still active (i.e. separates image files from other files).
Problem: I do not want the custom group to be active while I browse away from the folder in which I activated the custom group.
2. If I activate the custom group in that folder, save the folder settings and then browse to a different folder, the custom group is still active.
Problem: I do not want the custom group to be active in other folders than the ones in which I activated the group and saved the folder settings.

I believe that a more pleasant solution would be to have an option which allows custom groups to be active permanently in a tab or to be active only in folders with saved folder settings containing information about the custom group to be used.
There are basically 3 scenarios:
1. Have the custom group temporarily active: the custom group is active only in the current folder, but once the user browses to a different folder, the custom group disables.
2. Have the custom group permanently active: the custom group is active until the current tab is closed or the custom group is manually disabled.
3. Have the custom group active only in certain folders: the custom group activates automatically based on information saved in the folder settings file, and it automatically disables whenever that information isn't available any more.

as i see it, if your normal/default view mode doesn't include grouping, then getting into a folder with custom filters (saved earlier) will enable the grouping, and getting out of the folder will cancel the grouping. Do you see this?
to make your life easier nowadays you can use Actions > Folder settings > Default menu

If my normal/default view mode doesn't include custom grouping, then getting into a folder with custom filters (saved earlier) will enable the custom grouping, and getting out of the folder will NOT cancel the custom grouping unless I toggle normal grouping off then on.
Also, I do not see what the Actions > Folder settings > Default menu does. If it's enabled, I can still see custom grouping in folders where the settings have been saved, and it doesn't automatically disable custom grouping if I leave a folder which has saved custom grouping information.
