do 2x or x2 depend on Internet Explorer ?

Post by sgp »

Is there any current or planned dependency between 2x or x2 and IE--including its engine or dlls ?

I'm asking because I eradicated IE from my winME PC using the PClite product, and now I want to make sure to choose an explorer replacement that won't surprise me with IE dependencies down the road, and force me to re-install IE on my PC.

All CHM (HTML Help) files need IE4 or later installed on your PC.

Although IE is not directly needed to read them, its components are needed to render the CHM.

Since x2 will definitely have a CHM (plus a user manual, which could be a pdf file), you will need IE at least for that!

It sounds like you where useing Iexplorer 6.
5.5 is more stable.
Otherwise what was your problem with IE ? You can use another browser without "eradicateing IE "

x2 doesn't require any IE dlls except those that are shared with explorer (eg the common controls lib comctr32.dll). The thumbnail feature also may not work without shdocvw.dll. But i guess you can simply try and see if it works or not!

Indeed the thumbnail feature shows "no thumb" for .gif and .jpg files. I copied shdocvw.dll into the windows folder, restarted x2, but no thumbnails.

actually as i've just discovered the main dll is browseui.dll. You'll need to register it:

regsvr32 %SystemRoot%\System32\browseui.dll

and this requires the other dll i told you and who knows what more -- use dependency walker for the cross references

if this goes well you'll end up with registry keys like

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.gif\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}]
@="{7376D660-C583-11d0-A3A5-00C04FD706EC}"

I have W me. I installed and use x2 just as it came. All my common extension are viewable, except large jpg's.It states "no thumb available for x2 and just a black square for 2X.
Do you expect to add gif animation like Windows has ?

both 2x and x2 have a default 1MB limit for creating thumbnails. They won't show bigger files. But there are registry tweaks available, e.g. see registry.txt in 2x's distribution package
