x2 48 - no thumbnails for some (large?) pics

Post by jimspoon »

I notice that I'm not getting a thumbnail for some pics in x2 thumbnail view. It seems to be the pics with a large file size, mostly those I have saved in PNG format.

Searching other messages I found a reference to nMaxFileSizeThumb - does this registry value need to be set to generate a thumb for these large files?

Does the file format (e.g. PNG) have anything to do with it?

You found the right registry key to tweak [nMaxFileSizeThumb].
Set value to zero for no size constraints.
Be sure to exit x2 before you edit registry, and restart x2 after quitting REGEDIT. :)

That did the trick - thanks.

I wasn't sure whether that reg value was for the preview window or for the thumbnails, but I guess the value name should have been a big hint.

I am a little puzzled about the need for a file size limit. I figured x2 would just use the same thumbnail functions as Explorer, and they've never been too slow for me even for 10M files. Once you've got a thumb in the thumbs.db file, it shouldn't be slow at all? On the other hand, I've never tried generating a thumbnail for one of those 500MB files made from a 4000dpi scan. :P

explorer has many ways of accelerating thumbnail generation like thumns.db and AFS but all are private and undocumented. Poor x2 has to extract thumbs from scratch every time, thanks m$!

on the positive side, x2 thumbs can be of any size, especially so in the previewer

I hate having thumbs.db files floating around anyway. I turned off saving them, and deleteted the lot of them.

explorer may still be caching thumbnails behind your back, on NTFS partitions. THere it uses alt streams instead of thumbs.db, so basically you aren't aware of anything -- your HD certainly is though!

I wish explorer.exe luck... I ran it last when? 3 weeks ago? I use an alternate shell, so any processes running explorer.exe is rare. If there are any other nasties around I should know about, please don't hesitate to tell me :)
