Morning Star, that was the way x2 chain used to work till I gave in to pressure by narayan and co. In order to keep as many links in the chain regardless of the browsing order, a relocation policy is in place. It favors recency in place of narayan's fixed lateral arrangement view, which for me suffers since it doesn't remember the last folder used and at any rate it is unlikely that one would want to traverse folders with the exact same order unless one was fixed on rails!

Well, I think both types of history have their place. Personally, I'd also be happy if the linear system only kept 10 or 20 past (or future) dirs, as I am only likely to remember that many anyway...
Is it possible to have the simple one accessable via the 'back'/'forward' buttons, and the complex one accessible via the addressbar, etc.?

If you're going to have to code both (or all three), when not have them running concurrently. Surely it wouldn't be an efficiency issue...
It's just because I think that both the linear and non-linear history have their uses in different situations, and I by the time I realise which is going to be useful in some particular situation, it's too late to go off chainging registry keys...
If there is to be a registry key for anything, I suggest that it be for swapping between the different linear styles, as that seems to be where we differ on what would be useful. However, everyone seems to agree that the back/forwards should be linear, and the addressbar not linear.

I agree: do NOT provide a common system for all GUI elements:
* For each GUI element, provide a separate registry control. User should be able to independently control which of the 3 schemes to run for each element.
* The default schemes should be-
>>> Non-linear for folder pane headers
>>> Linear for the Forwards/Back buttons and the 4/5th mouse buttons

Come on Nikos, show some back bone!! Sure you're not going to give in to wining?!nikos wrote:i suppose this will save me from endless deliberations
It is a difficult subject, as the long discussions of present and past indicate... We should be careful not to make things too complicated, either from the user perspective or the programmer!!
But I must say: I prefer a solution which is primarily simple and intuitive to use, so I won't get confused using the history lists. That would in the end prevent me (and a lot of users with me) to use them at all!!
(I know I don't give a solution to your dilemma Nikos, but I'm trying to keep our feet on the ground)

Of course
Isn't the idea to add input.NOT COMPLAIN ABOUT WHAT YOU THINK IT SHOULD BE OR "OH MY GOD"IT ISN'T DOEING IT FOR ME.???JRz wrote:Come on Nikos, show some back bone!! Sure you're not going to give in to wining?!nikos wrote:i suppose this will save me from endless deliberations![]()

Zippit,
* Kindly do not copy and paste the entire post--paste only what is relevant. A better idea is to repeat only the keywords with some sumbols such as @. If people want, they can always visit the original post.
* Nowadays we waste a lot of creative energy in just answering your barbs. That really disturbs the whole direction of our discussions. Why don't you let us be and not prod us into reacting?
* Believe me, no one visits these pages to chat or share strictly personal opinions. Better join some chatrooms for that, where you can curse the world to your heart's content. These pages are only to help others.
* Finally, please don't rap visitors for the trouble they are already having; or gloat that you don't have that problem because you are smarter. They don't deserve that sneering.
A point to ponder: if we take a poll today, how many people would vote to revoke your membership from these forums?
Sorry for the harsh words, but enough is enough!

OK
But thats just my opinion, respect mine and i'll respect yours. When i downloaded x2 it was described as a "beta testing version"Do you know what that means ? It means report the results of your testing, not ask whyMorning Star wrote:I think that if Nikos has a problem with the things we say, or the way we say them, then it for him to deal with, not you.

You are right, of course. I submit my most humble and sincere apologies, Zippit.
Now that I have respected your opinion, how about you return the favour: give my opinions enough respect to allow them to pass to the people they were intended, for without pointless interjections.
