All Properties Are Theft...

Post by Kilmatead »

Having fun perusing the Properties of late, I discovered something potentially annoying in x2. Shell extensions such as Icaros often add columns of their own - and while normally x2 appends an [X] to any external properties in the column-selection list, for some reason these (and others from things unrelated to Icaros) just show up as plain-text - often conflicting with existing columns.

For example, in DeskRule, these are conveniently differentiated by the descriptions ($Icaros.BitDepth [audio] and $System.Image.BitDepth [pictorial]):

When displayed both of these columns are just called "Bit Depth" which, considering they are for completely different things, is a tad confusing... but since you explicitly searched for the $-tagged property (in DeskRule at least) it's clearer what the column actually is.

My point, though, is that in xplorer2 itself there is no distinction between the two: in the <Alt+K> column-selection dialog (and in Details) they both simply show up as "Bit Depth" - no appended {X}'s or even any text in the description field to source their identity.

So, in short, I'm thinking it would be handy if at least the low-level $-tags would be displayed in the column-description box when nothing else is available... no? Admittedly, this is merely a single example of a conflict, but there are other properties provided by extensions which conflict with the more traditional 'Comments [S]', etc, so having the $-tag labels available would make life easier all around for all columns, by making their ultimate source more obvious.

It would also make targeting these things by name in the Tools -> Advanced Options -> Global (tab) -> System Property List more accessible - to keep the infamous System.FileFRN from getting lonely on cold winter nights. Just a suggestion. :D

(And yes, apolologies to Pierre-Joseph Proudhon for paraphrasing his immortal La propriété, c'est le vol!)

I'll add the handler name for these [X] as a comment

It's also kind of curious that some of these don't actually show up with the [X] label... even though they are definitely from 3rd-party shell extensions. All the regular ones (such as from PDF handlers) still do, so it's a bit odd.
