Manifest, View Pane, interface

Using version 3.3.0.0 x64 9/13/2016. Everything is fine (http://i.imgur.com/rwdUSkv.png)

Then, remove/rename the Manifest file. Things change (http://i.imgur.com/XkSXpmk.png)

Some of the 'missing' features are annoying but not showstoppers. One clear benefit is - more information and less white space in the Pane!

How can I get the best of both? Wishing to have the missing features provided by the Manifest, but also keep the tighter grid view achieved by dropping the Manifest. Does the change have something to do with the MS Common Controls 6.0?

a trade off is to leave the manifest then to "disable some vista effects" from TOOLS > ADVANCED OPTIONS menu
