X2 Crashing

Post by RightPaddock »

Over past month or so X2 has been crashing quite often, previously X2 never crashed. But it's not when I'm using it, it's always when I'm not using it, and often as not its when it's minimised. There's no apparent pattern such as:- it crashes when I'm using Outlook, or Firefox, or Notepad++, or Unity Pro etc. On at least one occasion it crashed when I off was making a pot of tea, and it was the only 'App' running (minimised), although there were the usual swag of "Background processes" running.

I get one of those "xxxx just crashed, do you want to debug" messages from Windows 10. On one occasion it took an inordinate length of time to die, like 2-3 minutes, and whilst it was in its death throes the computer was effectively locked up. I have no idea what it was doing, the disks weren't thrashing, I couldn't get Task Manager or Process Explorer to start, even Ctrl+Alt+Del was inoperative. I've done all the usual things - scans with several AV products, examined error logs, ran diagnostics on disks, memory and video - no obvious cause.

My suspicion falls on recent Windows 10 (1511) updates, but no other programs have been crashing - just X2.

I appreciate I'm not using the latest version, but there is nothing in later versions of X2 that I want, let alone need. It's not a critical issue, tapping Winkey+2 to restart X2 is easy enough. So this is just a casual enquiry to ask if anyone else has had any similar problems of late.

I've not installed any new shell extensions, and I don't use the replace Windows Explorer feature.

Sods Law says it will stop happening now I've told someone about it :)

try HELP >CRASH INFORMATION menu command then email me the dump file found
it could simply be that it's time to get the windows 10 compatible xplorer2 :)
hint: there will be a BDJ sale next week

That cupboard is bare.

On reflection I think the actual msg is "xplorer2.exe has stopped working". Because it happens sporadically when I've parked X2, and never when I'm using it, I figure its one of the 'background' tasks throwing a curve ball/googly which disturbs its equanimity. When and if it happens again I'll pay more attention, until now I've just cancelled its 'looking for a solution' process and tapped Winkey+2.

New version, to overcome this issue? Nah, not worth the time, effort, and money. I don't use/need X2 to the extent I did a few years ago. Maybe I could just about get by without it.

wild shot: use TOOLS > ADVANCED OPTIONS menu command and tick "Don't use shell thread reference" in GLOBAL options page. This is the usual culprit for x64 random crashes

If the problem persists and especially if its frequency increases I'll try that. It's very intermittent, once or twice a week at the most, and because it's so easily overcome I'm not inclined to change things on spec.

I was really only wondering if anyone has had X2, or anything else, crashing like this in recent times - when they're not in use. Otherwise I'm OK with kicking the issue into the long grass.

Cheers

Maybe Sod was looking over my shoulder - hasn't happened since that post.

I did change something though. Because it only crashed when it was minimised, I changed the taskbar shortcut to start it minimised, at the time there was some convoluted logic behind why I did that.
