Display folders view identically?

Post by appyface »

Fresh install win11 pro 23H2, fresh install of x2 6.0.0.3 no settings imported. Few changes in options and in advanced options.

I have read back through the forum discussions on saving folder settings to all subfolders, desktop.ini files, dual pane each has own, layouts in different situations, etc. Can't seem to come up with what I need to do, to get all folders and subfolders on a drive to display the same way in x2.

I've tried different things with suspend, save, clear, etc. but still not getting there. I even reviewed an old thread of my own on this going back to 1.x version but still not getting there or getting "it".

Easy example first.

Root folder, C:\, showing in single pane mode, displaying exactly as I want with respect to columns selected, column widths. I used actions -> folder settings -> save -> apply the same folder settings for all subfolders. A desktop.ini file was created in root folder (and custom icon is displayed in status bar). Exited x2 (was only instance. also have /M /N /P switches on launch FYI).

Launch x2 again, C:\ appears just as I want. Drill in to a data subfolder of C:\, columns and widths not the same. What does "apply the same folder settings for all subfolders" do, if not to apply these settings? And how do I get them to apply to all subfolders? Is cloning desktop.ini file the only answer???

I also noticed under folder settings that 'default' is greyed out when I am on my customized view of C:\. but if I move to a subfolder without a desktop.ini, "default" is available. Is this something I can use to have my preferred view columns and widths applied whenever there is no desktop.ini? I tried to play around with this idea a little bit but wasn't successful.

the problem is that you have overused the custom folder settings feature. You only need to use SAVE (settings) in the few folders you want to see differently. See here for more information

Displaying folders identically ensures a consistent and organized user experience across different directories. It helps users quickly locate files by maintaining uniform layout, sorting, and view preferences. This is particularly useful when managing large data sets, as it reduces confusion. A synchronized folder view saves time and enhances productivity by making navigation predictable.

Yes I was definitely confused by the online help, the documentation, and numerous forum posts. X2 did not seem to be behaving as it should no matter what advice I tried to follow. Bottom line, removing all custom settings everywhere solved it as I don't need any custom folder settings at this time. Thank you.
