how to sort

Post by RTC »

Dear Gurus,

Could you help me with this one...? I'm sure it must be pretty straight forward but I can't seem to accomplish this...

xplorer2 prof x64 3.1.0.1

dual pane
both panes detail view
Name Size Modified Extension columns

I would like the default sort order for all my panes:

Folders: on top; sort on name column
Files: sort on Modified column

For some reason I can't manage this...then again I'm no Guru...

Appreciate your help or pointer in right direction...

you can have folders sorted separately (on top) from TOOLS > OPTIONS menu, then WINDOW page. But it is not possible to sort folders by name and files by date, a single mode goes for all items

Did you ever wonder what happened to Moses after he parted the Red Sea and kicked Pharaoh in the teeth? Or Houdini after he confounded the clever and bamboozled the boobs? Or Stradivarius after he saw Hendrix at Woodstock? Or, worse, Vercingetorix after Caesar ate his Wheetabix?

This is the problem with getting a reputation - no one ever sees the real you. I mean, Moses there walked for ages and ages and took up smoking and gambling and womanising and all that good stuff - but no one ever hears about that side of the story. And Houdini started doing weird things like jumping into iced-over rivers, bless his skinny shivering arse. And poor Stradivarius never fully rationalised the whole left-handed upside-down tuning thing, and eventually went mad drinking watered-down Maitai's in Bora Bora.

What's the moral of the story? 30 years ago I fell in love with and sought forgiveness in the arms of a dark-skinned ephemeral girl named Juárez and ever since have judged all other women by her violent charms. Now, perhaps, I might regret that particular fixation, but the thunder still silences my helpless wonder that such a creature ever could exist.

I'm afraid that there's only so much I can do to correct the monstrous wrongs that Nikos has done to civilisation, and from time to time even I must accept defeat and curse his name quietly, biding my time, waiting for the right moment to strike deep with the knife of a just and glorious liberation. :D

Other file managers provide that sort option, I am sure Nikos has the talent to provide it as well. The only question is whether he has the time and desire to make the changes needed. Possibly there are higher priority features that he thinks deserve his attention before this one.

Slowly a little corner of Kilmateads veil is lifted....

But that's a different story...

Thanks for the confirmation that nothing can be done to this omission...

@drac: yes I indeed thought that that option does exist in other FMs...I do hope Nikos will see this as a feature request...

regards & case closed...

Dear Gurus

It has been 7 years now since I asked for help on this topic...
Back then it wasn't possible....
Many moons passed by, we survived the pandemic so I hope this feature request must by now be almost ready for prime time ...?

Any update if this will be implemented as it already is in some other FM...?

Fr regards

welcome back
unfortunately you cannot still have folders and files sorted by a different method.
as a workaround you can sort the contents pane by date modified, and align the folder tree which will show you the folders in alphabetical order
you can have the tree automatically following the active folder using TOOLS > OPTIONS

Thank you Nikos....
Too bad it's still not possible...
The workaround is eh... a workaround...not esthetic..I guess I will have to do with that...
Unless Kilmatead has the one and only solution...

I remain optimistic...

I remain optimistic...
In the proper Hellenistic religions, Euphrosyne was (still is?) one of the three Charities or Graces, and loosely interpreted could be considered a goddess of Optimism. On the (very rare) opportunities that a good cynic like myself would have cruising the bars of ancient Athens and picking up chicks, heavenly daughters of her sort tended not to give curmudgeonly doom-sayers like myself much of second glance beyond the sisterly sympathy that the more virulent sons of Zeus would have just laughed off.

And Euphrosyne was not wrong to shun me! for as much as my beard did not come to a fashionable (in those days) point, but rather the scaggled mess I still sport today - yet loath to quote myself (well, not really!) - the comment I made previously still applies...

Yet may Euphrosyne weep for us, that emancipation will not be today.

The programmable column string

Code: Select all

    if(mid(${Attributes},5,1)="d",${Name},DATETIME(${Modified},"yyyy-mm-dd"," hh:mm:ss"))
along with the tool option to sort folders at the top of the pane gives me, when selected as the sort column, folders by name followed by files by ascending modified date. Unfortunately, a separate programmable string would be needed to sort the files by descending modified date, likely using DATE("")-$(Modified) as the time supplied to the DATETIME function, but i can not get any date arithmetic to work on my installation of X2 (likely just me).

Nice. I might play with this a bit. Date descending is how I prefer most of my folders, but folder alpha with file date descending would be nice for a few particular folders I use practically every day.

Cool...my prayers have been answered...:D

If only one of you guru's could help me sort this out: I have no clue how to proceed from this point...Layman's terms please
Or should I forget about this till Nikos figured it out and in the mean time proceed with smoking, gambling and womanising...
