Problem: Can't view complete file names

Post by FightingBob »

I've encountered a strange problem with my relatively new installation of xplorer2 Version 6 on my Windows 11 computer that I don't think I ever had (or at least noticed) in earlier versions, such as with Version 5, which is still running on my Windows 10 laptop.

Sometimes when I open a folder, all of the file names that are longer than some arbitrary number of characters are cut off and end in ellipses, which cut off both the rest of the file names and the file extensions. I've seen this behavior cut off file names that were around only 12 characters or so. Just now I created a test folder, and copied a bunch of files into it. At first, all file names of around 20 characters were cut off. I restarted xplorer2, and then only one file name was cut off. That file name is 40 characters long. Restarting xplorer2 a second time leaves that file's name cut off. Oddly, the ellipsis, which of course consists of 3 periods, cuts off only the last two letters of the file extension, so it's really not even doing the job of limiting the number of characters that are visible.

The test folder that I created just now has only a single column, and it’s shown in List view, which is what I always use. To the right of that column, the blank space takes up about two-thirds of the pane. The name of that 40-character long file remains cut off even if I change to a single pane. So it's not as though the curtailment of the file name is needed in order to make room to view multiple columns, as would be the case with, say, Details view.

I created the very same test file in Version 5 on my Windows 10 laptop, and I can view the complete name of every single file. So I'm guessing that this is either a Version 6 issue, or a Windows 11 issue, or both.

I came across only two settings in Options that may or may not be relevant. Both are under Window | View panes. There, "Full row selection" is toggled on, and "Max list width" is set at "250." But I have no idea whether those setting are in fact relevant or, if they are, in what way.

Is there a way to disable, or at least manage this behavior?

Thanks.

There are a couple of options In Tools/Options that might help
Window/View panes there is a max list width (this one only affects list mode)
Advanced there is a resize name column

Setting the max list width to 0 fixed it after a restart.

Thanks for the help.
