Omni-Find (CTRL-F) Help Needed

Post by appyface »

I am trying to use CTRL-F to find any filenames in subdirectory, containing " v" (space then a "v").

I enter it that way in the filename box, but without the quotes (leading space then the v).

I am getting back all filenames that contain a v.

I found this in the manual, Appendix 9O, under specifying filename searches:

-----------------------------
2. Do not use quotes (“ “) around the phrase (as you do in Google),  because x2  looks for all  characters, including quotes and spaces, exactly as entered.
-----------------------------

(bold reference is mine)  Find filename box does not seem to be honoring this?

I also wish to search for any filename with a space in the filename, cannot seem to do this either as X2 seems to ignore a lone space in the filename box.

Any ideas on how to get " v" working, and also how to find filenames with spaces in the names?  I tried using a regular expression in the filename box just for grins but of course it wasn't recognized, I think that function is only available for searching within files...

As always please point me to manual or other posts if I missed finding the information already recorded.

Thanks and regards,

Hi Appyface,
The following works for me.

To find files containing "space + "v":

Named: * v*.*

To find files containing "space":

Named: * *.*

Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Robert

I don't usually think of adding the asterisks since x2 adds them automatically... I should have thought of that.  Thank you, I will use your tip!

Here I am, 17 years later, forgot how to find embedded space in CTRL-F and came here to find out. So glad my old posts were retained 🤣
