operations in the Folder Tree window

Post by rnmerchant »

Seems to me that I've recently lost the ability to do operations in the Folder Tree. I'm sure I used to delete folders in the Tree using the delete key as one can do in the other (?file) window but now that doesn't work. However, I can right-click on it to delete a folder, or delete in the file window either way... I think this is since upgrading to Ultimate.

None of this I am sure about...

Version 6.1.0.2 ULT x64 2025-03-09

Am I missing something? Did I configure something incorrectly by accident?

many file operations work in the folder tree. You can either use the keyboard (e.g. DEL key to delete the selected folder), or use the context menu
note that sometimes when you click on a tree folder, the focus automatically switches to the folder view (to the right), so keys will no longer work in the tree. In that case better use the context menu

Yes, I think I see what you mean.

Often when I click on a folder in the folder tree (left window) then the right window becomes the active window. Then keyboard operations will no longer work in the left folder tree window.

That seems to me sort of odd - that a different window takes the focus - but I suppose there is some purpose for that.

It interferes somewhat with my workflow: I'm looking at a group of folders and I see one is full of material I don't want, and therefore want to simply delete the whole folder. I can't use the delete key to do that. So my workflow needed three steps: to then highlighting the root folder in the tree, highlighting the chosen folder on the right, and then delete it with the delete key. Second choice is to use the context menu as I find that more awkward - I have too many choices in the context menu (despite trying to manage that) and with my morning-coffee-tremor getting the correct one can require attention.

However now I understand. Should it be a user-option for the focus to switch to the different window? I'm not sure that I need that to happen, even for other things I need to do...

there is a tree option that controls this behavior; use TOOLS > OPTIONS, and in the Tree section tick off the option that says "automatically activate view" or something like that

Yes: it seems to be "focus to view". Unclick that and the focus doesn't shift automatically.

I thought that this was new for me since I upgraded to ultimate but i see that I have the option selected in the un-ultimate version too. So I just never noticed it.

Ageism is real and perhaps correct.

In any case, thank you. Issue solved. :D
