Viewing extended file properties

Post by fred795 »

There are many places we can interact with file properties (columns, renaming, mass changing etc), but is there a place we can conveniently view all the properties for a file (or files)?

"File (or right click) - Properties - Details" only shows a small subset of what's available.

if you use ALT+K dialog to pick file details (to see) you will see the list of all available properties
if you have ultimate edition, you also have access to all 1000 of system properties (see www.zabkat.com/blog/ultimate-vs-professional.htm)

but frankly, most of them are useless...
there are a few like Author and Title useful for books, Duration and bitrate for music, dimensions for photos. Most of the others are empty for all files.

Sorry, I said properties, but what I'd like to see is a window with a complete list of property / value pairs for a given file, so I can see at a glance which properties are used (and how), and which are empty.

Something similar to NirSoft's PropertySytemView (https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/windows_p ... _view.html)

Or the "Show List of File Properties" option in Bulk Rename Utility.

Is that possible in Xplorer2? (I do have the ultimate edition)

Are you implying that all non-empty properties/values should be available to view through the details tab in the property page?

If so, perhaps what I saw was a dodgy file / environment issue.

I run different versions of Xplorer2 on multiple PCs. The attached pic shows that for a particular file (but not others than I can find with a quick scan), the property pages are different depending on which computer I access the file from. Interestingly the left (read only) property page is from the local pc (win 8,1, x2v5.0), and the right (more complete) page is when accessing the file remotely (w11, x2v5.5).

I do have another question. I notice when changing a property (e.g. title), the entire file appears to be rewritten/recreated (I can see a tmp file being created in the folder, and watch the size increase). This can take some time for large files. Is this expected behaviour?

it all depends what kind of property handlers you have installed, and the file types they work for
xplorer2 is a mere correspondent in this picture, showing you what's available
to examine what kind of handlers you have installed per file type see this tool

regarding your other question, when you change file properties the file itself changes
for a few basic properties that xplorer2 knows of, there is an option NOT to change the file modification date, e.g. when setting comments with ALT+Z (it is called Preserve dates and found in the Advanced section of TOOLS > OPTIONS menu)
