Mass rename into subfolder(s)

Post by fred795 »

I'd like to be able to use the mass renamer to move files into an appropiate folder (which might or might not currently exist), using a file attribute.

Something like this:
Mode: Replace whole name
Target name template: ${Contributing artists}\$N

Currently the \ is replaced by _ (which would make sense if I didn't want to move the files)
I've also tried \\ and $\

I understand that this isn't strictly a "rename", but in the real world I'd be changing other parts of the name at the same time, so it would be convenient to also move the file from this interface.

Is there something I'm missing that would make this easy? I'm using 5.5 if that matters.

rename doesn't allow path change
perhaps you can try EXTRACT GROUPS feature, once you group on contributing artists property
for more information see here www.zabkat.com/x2h_5.htm#xa_datedirs
you must place your files in a scrap container

Oooh, nice trick. I typically use MusicBrainz' Picard software to manipulate RIPped audio (flac) files, but I have a bunch of recovered files that I really need to tackle, and this might help me out a lot.

Thanks Nikos, never considered that before.
