Thanks for your answer

Were you running x2 (originally) as Admin? No that I know, I usually do things as simple as possible.

Where can I check the "mode" of operation ?

I check the "security" tab of task's "property" in task manager.
I notice that Thunderbird and X2'program" have 2 user's group that are missing in X2 local.
these are :
-All application packages
-All application packages restricted
The real names are in french this English wording is my guess.

I don't pretend to be fluent in the security tab options, so I avoid touching them as much as possible. :D

However, as a simple test, run x2 as admin (right-click the shortcut or executable and select "Run as administrator") or I think from within x2 itself you can just click the menu command Window -> Administrator.

The window's title-bar text should display a "*" at the end of its text.

Then try your drag-&-drop to thunderbird again, to see if it works as it used to.

if you run xplorer2 straight off the installer then it runs as administrator. Quit and restart it to run it normally and drag/drop will work better

I'm not sure which method he used to put x2 "outside" the program files folder... if he did the full install, or just copied the folder, or went the portable route. Thus I'm just guessing at the elevation state, so when in doubt, test whatever comes to mind!

So essentially you're saying that while the Anglo-French Wars lasted from 1066 – 1815, we actually could have saved 800 years of trouble just by throwing plastic mice at you?

Now we know what we should have given to Algeria for Christmas a long time ago! La Légion étrangère is perhaps not the mighty force its history portends.

The magic of installing x2 outside "program file" does not solve any more the blue star issue !
Image
in addition to the blue stars the "normal' icons do not show !

This appear this afternoon when I first start my PC for the day
The only noticeable event is a windows Update W10 22H2 KB5001716 that has been installed on 2/7/2025, probably end of day.

Did you actually install it (as in uninstall the other one and choose a new location) or just copy the folder?

Wait... forget that question. Mine doesn't work after a restart either, now. Bugger. Which is strange, as it survived a full restart yesterday.

No, I still have all other icons - in my case it's just the folders that are stars again. I had no windows updates, so I can't speak to that.

It depends on whether you count the Battle of Hastings or not. Wikipedia suggests you shouldn't.
