Possible bug in checkboxes and filter

Post by mjdalways »

Reproduction Steps:
1. Use checkboxes, select a number of items (e.g. A, C, D)
2. filter for some files not in the list (e.g. E)
3. delete the text in the filter one character at a time (as you normally would, just use backspace)
You might have to repeat the above steps 2 and 3 again

As you do this watch to see the checkbox status, I've seen multiple different issues
1) The new selected rows get checked, original checked items disappear
2) All items get selected (everything in the folder)

I've also seen that when I try to filter and then checkbox within the filter sometimes it removes my existing checkboxes, which was the original issue I was going to report until I saw more serious issues with checkboxes.

This is the trial version of 6.2.0.2 ULT x64 8/13/2025
I am not running any add-ons or customizations

My goal:
Given the following files
AnotherDocA1,AnotherDocA2,AnotherDocA3, DifferentDocB1, DifferentDocB2, DifferentDocB3, DocC1, DocC2, DocC3, ....

Assume there are hundreds of files like this, I want to select all the AnotherDocA and the DocC, so I filter by AnotherDocA select them all (mouse click the first, shift click the last) and then hit space to set the checkboxes, then filter by DocC and want to do the same thing, ultimately ending up with all AnotherDocA and DocC checked, but sometimes maybe unchecking a few if needed.

Ultimately I would like checkboxes to behave consistently.

Apologies, thought of one more thing. The Mark menu should make it clear that you select checkboxes with space. It would also be nice to be able to checkmark just the filtered items using CTRL-A or something, or at least warn you that it will check more than is shown on the screen. I have just seen there is a Select Group command that might better fit my solution, but I think my issue still stands, if I have a lot of checked items, and I filter I would expect the checkmarks to remain regardless of how many times I filter the files.
Thanks,
mjdalways

I find it oddly pleasing that you are decidedly not a medical doctor.

I find it oddly pleasing that you are decidedly not a medical doctor.
Most doctors are excellent at hiding their WTF moments behind their, white coats, stethoscope draped around their necks, peering condescendingly over their +0 glasses, and their favourite reply to "what's wrong doctor", is "I need to verify the results with a blood test" i.e. bug hunting.
I had a foot fungus which several doctors couldn't eradicate, not even Asian Tiger balm. I continued seeing different doctors, I went to a elderly doctor, he looked, he smiled and said, "ah we're going to have to fix that old school", I stared at him thinking 'what, chop toes off', "what you have cannot be fixed from the outside I'm going to prescribe blue tablets which should work", and yes my foot fungus permanently disappeared. Seeing as I have a captive audience I'll bore you with how I contracted this foot fungus.

I was on my Veranda, hammock, coffee, staring at the waves when my Creole maid arrived to clean, mentally plotting her progress as per the busy cleaning sounds she was making, (if I was at home when she cleaned she would always exaggerate the cleaning sounds to impress that she was REALLY cleaning "bang, crash, rattle, loud scrubs" etc), I heard her scrubbing the shower floors, I thought 'let me check how she's doing that', lo and behold the TOILET brush was vigorously in use AND rinsed in the toilet, finally problem solved. I almost melted the shower's ceramic tiles with the combination of cleaning agents I used.

Bug hunting is a bitch...

Hmm... not quite there yet - the filtering (typing) part seems better (not sure it's flawless), but simple selection is a bit weird: if I choose the filter for all folders, they are indeed checked and highlighted, but if I choose a .txt filter (from user-filters) or something, the txt file is highlighted, but NOT selected even if it was earlier. Same with any other types. Folders yes, files, no.

(This is just a quick test during a coffee break, so I probably missed the Godzilla sized bugs... plus I'm unpractised in the dark arts of checkbox-kung-fu... with my luck, it'll give me a foot-fungus or something... how to binge-watch 15 seasons of E.R... so few hours in the day...)

I completely disavow the above testing complaint about file filtering  I was using my own apostate method so the results bear no relation to other people's reality. I humbly reduce my rating down to "hungry supplicant" and will celebrate my poverty by living on canned-spaghetti for a week (which, curiously enough, I was going to do anyway, but now I can claim humility as penance).

As apparently one of the few people who don't have a hammock, I was 15 metres up a tree with a chainsaw (something even I admit I really shouldn't be allowed to do), when I realised my mistake (why does inspiration never strike when it's convenient?).

I can redeem myself slightly by pointing out that "invert selection" doesn't invert the checkboxes... the originals remain checked but everything else is only highlighted. I can imagine that in some parts of Micronesia the women come to true fisticuffs arguing over whether or not that might be a bug, a feature, or an intentional misdirect. The men, of course, just don't care - they're too hip to be square. But with Micronesian women you just never know... they can be a surprisingly liberal sort (when it comes to inverting things).

so basically I can safely stay resting in hammocks for a while
working with checkboxes is weird, one way to turn checkboxes into selection is to use CTRL+C

Not E.R. that's a medical soapie for maids. "House" with Hugh Laurie is the ultimate medical bug hunter, great production, cast, and witty sarcasm.
