Add button to activate show hidden items option?

Is there any way to create one of these? I found an old thread discussing this (can't find it now) but the links it had were no longer valid.

if you double click on the hidden items icon part of the statusbar it toggles this mode on/off, see

I never noticed this before ... but based upon user settings, you have to know where to click/hover as there are no icons on the statusbar:
