Ah... indeed I see it. I shall now (soometime) go back to the first reply to admire the answer, marvel how an answered question expanded to 30 replies, and thank the powers above that Mr. Python was indeed not involved. Why are things not always so simple? (Aside from myself, of course - my mother always said I was a bit simple).

Thanks for all the erudition.

May I also gently complain that the column entitled "#" is the only one in the list (that I see) that is not a text-described property, hence is not particularly obvious to the uninitiated, nor is it available through the filtering function in the program.

As such it is perhaps too obscure for the 'average' user (or below average, such as myself). Is there any reason why it is not simply called "track", if this indeed is the only thing it is used for?

Well, it is if you type the actual hash-character into the filter. But then you have to know what it is in the first place, so it's a chicken and the egg thing. :D

Not knowing for sure and not being bothered enough to look it up properly, off the top of my head I would imagine that back then Gates (if indeed he personally thought of it) didn't want to confuse the notion with "8-track-tape", where the meaning is completely different.

Not to mention, no one ever imagined digitising vinyl except science-fiction writers. So I imagine it was intended for some separate purpose, like "file number", or whatever, and just became "track" by its failure to be adopted elsewhere.

But that's just a guess. (Some things are more fun to guess about than to know about. Like death. And evil creepy-crawly spider-analogues.)

Generally I go by the maxim "those who do not know history are condemned to repeat it". This is very apropos in today's world (sadly).

However despite it's value I fear it does not apply to this particular item. Surely nobody will repeat that deliberately! Or, perhaps.....

History repeats because human nature doesn't change, Power, Greed, and a attraction to shiny objects, innate instincts which are supposed to be mitigated with education.

I'm amazed at your persistence in removing ONE character from your string to make space for one more character, doesn't your screen have a scroll feature ?.

Well - 5 characters perhaps ... "01 - " That might be a whole word! (Although the naming convention is much more variable than that). I have zero control or scrolling influence over the auto's display. What you see is what you get.

R

PS I spent a total of 11 years in schooling post high school - might not necessarily correlate with "education" of course - but I am equally swayed by innate human instincts...
