"Unauthorized file encryption"?

Post by Brig »

Nikos and All:

I use x2 at work, have for years and years. This morning, as I was selecting multiple files on a network folder and dragging them to another network folder, x2 vanished--mid-drag--and a pop-up message from Trend Micro appeared saying the x2 exe file (latest version, Ultimate 64) has been quarantined for "unauthorized file encryption." Take a look:

Click that details link and you go to this url: http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/us/thre ... encryption

This happened twice (I reinstalled x2 after the first one) and each time it was when I tried to drag and drop multiple files. Individual files can be dragged and dropped without problem.

What's going on? Has this happened to anyone else?

Thanks for your thoughts,
Brig

I imagine that either your source or target folders were encrypted so the file copy involved some encryption performed. As for my take on antivirus programs please see here www.zabkat.com/blog/antivirus-programs-suck.htm

I don't think either folder is encrypted, but I'll make sure on Monday. What struck me is that 1) this is the first time I've ever seen this happen--in at least a decade of similar work--and that 2) the problem occurred only when more than one file was being dragged and dropped; single files posed no problem at all. That made me suspect x2. Sorry :D (I have no idea what goes on under the hood.)

I enjoyed your blog about AV programs, even though I can't bring myself to uninstall the basic, free AV protection on this laptop, which is still running XP. My work laptop is another story--I'm stuck with the company's AV program. I really hope this issue can get cleared up. Work will become that much more hellish if it can't.
