Bookmarks/Favorite Folders IN GROUPS?

Post by TenYearsGone »

Hello and first off I will apologize in advance if this topic has already been addressed. With a quick search I didn't find anything.

(Up front, I'll say that I sometimes use xplorer2 Professional & sometimes xplorer2 Lite, so if your answer applies to one and not the other, please try to point that out.)

My question is this. Is it possible now, and if not now perhaps in a future version of Xplorer2... to Bookmark GROUPS of file/folder tabs?

Here's the situation. I have used xplorer2 for years. And I find that I ALWAYS have two panes/windows open AND that within those panes I will build up a LOT of common tab folders that I use frequently, and even often have the tabs placed in a certain order within the pane.

I can save each tab as a bookmark, of course. When I close xplorer2, all of my tabs are saved and re-open exactly the same the next time I open xplorer2. This usually works fine. But there are problem times when this doesn't work properly. First, it seems that xplorer2 only saves my currently opened panes/tabs layout when I close the program. If the program crashes, it doesn't save my currently opened panes/tabs layout, and the next time I open xplorer2, it defaults to the "last saved" layout. Beats starting from scratch, but I still lose my previous session. Another example is that if I have network drives open in my current pane/tab layout. If these drives need to be logged into, and I open xplorer2 and my last-saved pane/tab layout contained any "need to be logged into network drives", AND if I haven't first logged into these drives BEFORE opening xplorer2, then I lose them all and their path defaults to my Desktop. Same goes for if I had paths connected to external USB drives and the USB drive isn't plugged in or active when I re-open xplorer2.

I hope that my description is understandable.

So my question is this:
1. Can I or is there a way to bookmark a GROUP of folder tabs?

If not, I think this would be a great feature. I've been using xplorer2 like this for years and years and I would think that many others use it in the same way.

Also related, if there would be some way to have xplorer2 save your "current tabs" setup while in use (vs. what currently seems to be that it only saves your current tabs when you close the program), that would also be great. Maybe this would possibly affect performance. Or maybe it could be setup like a backup... you could say "save current tab layout every X minutes" or something. Just an idea. Or... maybe you can already do everything I've asked about and I just don't know how to do it.

Thanks in advance for any replies!

Customise -> Folder Groups -> Add Current

"Folder Groups" are, despite inclement nomenclature, the collected set of folder tabs open in the current pane, so they may be saved/recalled collectively whenever you want. You are not limited to just a single group, as are saved by default. You may treat them the same way as bookmarks, just from a different menu item; they may also be placed on toolbars for convenient access, or targeted directly (by name) at startup via the command-line (independently of those saved in the settings). See Pages 242 and 374 respectively of the PDF manual for more information.

As usual, if a mapped or USB drive is unavailable when invoking the tab group, that particular tab will default to Desktop, however, its original path should be preserved so if recalled later (when that folder is actually available) it will be displayed again, and not "lost" as happens with the groups saved on closure.

While the above effectively makes this redundant, Actions -> Save Settings Now may be used at any time while the programme is running, to do the same as happens at shutdown. It must be manually called, but creating a toolbar-button or keyboard-shortcut for it would simplify access a bit.

I suspect Folder Groups are not available in the Lite version, though as an observation, if those computers you are using x2 Lite on are your own and only you use them, you may install x2 Pro and use your same license. The rules for this are relaxed, assuming you're the primary user, so licenses are not strictly "one machine install only". Nikos asks only that you not abuse it.

Thank you very much!!! So all my dreams have already come true and I just didn't realize it, which is what I was hoping for. Very good!

...now to find my license key again... ahh well it's time that I should just upgrade to "Ultimate" anyway!
