I use Astel & Kern HD Music player with my laptop. It attaches via a USB cable and my laptop reads it as external storage. However, I'm unable to catalogue it as an offline device.. the device picker doesn't show it.
Why?

at present deskrule cannot do non-filesystem external devices
you can search for files in it while connected, but not as part of the offline database
