Specifying Searches

I am running 5.2.0.0 ULT x64. I wanted to find files that contained joseph in the name. If I specify just joseph, Find Files will find them. If I specify joseph* it won't find any files. Why would that be?

Try using *joseph*.*

if you don't put any wildcards in the name, it is equivalent to *joseph*
the way you put it, it would only file files starting with joseph

I seem to remember discussing this before, and I didn't agree with your logic of adding wildcards before and after. I want to find "battery.htm" so I enter "battery" and it finds a load of files with "battery" in their name. To find just "battery.htm" I have to enter "battery.*". I would prefer that the wildcards are not added automatically. Just by 2-pence worth!

All text rules (including filenames) can have an optional leading ':' colon character meaning an EXACT match. Whereas a string rule like TEST will match TEST1 and thatTEST, using :TEST will only match TEST and nothing else. It implements IS relationship instead of CONTAINS. For text rules other than filenames you must also tick the VERBATIM box
