FTP not working?

Post by MeToo »

Greetings to all!
This is my first posting.

First of all, thank you Nikos for creating 2xExplorer and x2 and making it available for free. I hope you can resist to make it shareware after all the free testing (like the guys from Servant Salamander did)!

I tried to ftp to my local server using ftp://login:pass@10.14.26.1 and got the message "Windows cannot access this folder". After that any folder or drive that you attempt to open on that pane is added to the path and can not be opened. The only option is to close x2.
Any suggestions or is this a bug?

Regards,
MeToo

After my initial success,
I, too, have had similar problems. :(

As this is a brand new feature, it seems there are a few issues to be resolved before ftp with x2 becomes smooth.

PS (according to Microsoft):
No longer are there "bugs" in software -- only "issues"

this is a "feature" indeed
what you can do to get rid of it is click on the tree to change folders
or use Alt+arrow to get to the old folder

can you access this ftp address from internet explorer?

Nikos:

I tried to access etree music archive via an anonymous login. Xplorer2 took a long time to display the directory and through up a message saying, "The item could not be transferred. Make sure you have permission to store files here and that the filename is valid. Details: The connection with the server is reset."
Xplorer2 did show the 2 directories. I copy/pasted the URL into IE and had no problem navigating the directory tree in reasonable time.

cheers!

the current version doesn't like it at all when you sort by anything other than name. (sorting by name before you get into ftp should work fast). But I believe I have made some changes for .55 that will make things overall much faster

It works in IE...

Post by MeToo »

Hi All

It works in IE, although I can't get access to some parent folders (as I do with Filezilla)
Thanks for the Alt+Arrow tip. Backspace also works.
BTW if you deactive the Save Settings option in Actions nothing gets registered so you don't have to worry about readable passwords in the registry...
Where is .55?

Nikos, I get the same eror as first reported on this post. I try to get into the help file site and fail. I get error messages about file permissions and resolving addresses etc. I guess this could be due to the firewall. But when I try to go to another folder I get the drive name appended to the original ftp address, even though it still complains with the same errors. The only way I could get out of that ftp site is to choose a special folder from the menu.

This is on version 55.

when in ftp, all paths are (stupendusly) resolved within the server
you can get out by clicking on the tree (if on) or ctrl+bksp to go to the desktop (or what you do with special folders)

i'll have another look at that comcast site

Since the latest x2 version[0.0.0.55], wherein nikos has solved most of the ftp workability issues, I am back to being excited about the feature.
I now find it to be more convenient to ftp (to known valid ftp-sites) with x2, than it is to bother with a separate ftp utility.
There are some cases(*) where this doesn't hold true, but for my current ftp usage to private ftp-sites, xplorer² is all I need. :)

x2 addressbar syntax to pivate ftp-sites is
ftp://USERID:PASSWORD@FTPSITEID/STARTINGFOLDER/

x2 addressbar syntax to public (**) ftp-sites is
ftp://FTPSITEID/STARTINGFOLDERPATH/
example: ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/docs/books/gutenberg/

(*) currently the main issue that I have left with x2 ftp is that the password required for access to private ftp sites is not encrypted & appears on screen & in the registry in plain text -- so it shouldn't be used on a multiuser or public computer where particular ftp-site access should be restricted.

(**) I have found that many public "anonymous-ftp" cannot be accessed from behind a corporate firewall this way, even though I can access at least some from home computer behind LINKSYS hardware firewall using x2. {can't access these sites from behind corporate firewall using 'regular' ftp client WS_FTP either}
This may be a matter of firewall settings (I'm not the expert here).
Frustrating side-note: I also have found that a great many ftp-site links that are posted around the web are out-of-date making it difficult to test. This is true for some old favorites that I haven't used for years because http:// access to the material is generally available and easier to navigate. And it appears that some of these sites work for me from home, but not from behind corporate firewall e.g.: ftp://gutenberg.org
(paranormal behaviour? -- or have they left forwarding links that can be resolved & acted upon in one case & not the other?)

FTP still not working under .55

Post by MeToo »

Hi all

I get the same error message as before when trying to access my local server. I tried acessing the Guttenberg project page as mentioned by fgagnon but got the same message. I can access both with IE6.

Good news: opening zip files in network folders no longer crashes x2!

Well done nikos!

It is a pitty you didn't accept my suggestion of using an unzip and unrar library... this would be nice for Win9x users (I still use Win98SE at home...)

Hi,

I've an FTP account, and to access them, I've to time something like this:

ftp://user@student:pass@server:port

but with xplorer2 I can't.

Can you add this to the xplorer2?

Nikos,
Although the x2 ftp works ok for many of us, it doesn't for the cases where "@" is part of userid or password. Can you incorporate a syntax that you can easily parse to properly pass those elements through to the ftp site for log-on?
(perhaps by permitting quotes around the @, or entire userid or entire password, or using @@ for @, or /@ ... etc)

i don't parse these addresses at all; IE decides what to do with them
moreover there are some sad news ahead since i've read that m$ are dropping the user:pass@site.com syntax from windows due to security considerations, so anytime soon this will stop working over here too :(

v_c, can you access that ftp accout typing the exact same address in IE's addressbar?
