Hardlinks of folders

Post by BRX »

Hi Nikos,

somehow my x2 lost the capability to paste hardlinks of folders with its contents. It just displays the message "Can't hardlink folders; try a juncction".

Are you aware of this? Is this due to a change in Windows or x2 or a bug? It worked before. I'm aware that it technically wasn't hardlinking a folder but creating one (and folder substructure) and hardlinking the files.

Why doesn't work that any more? It was such a neat (and often used by me) feature.

pasting a folder junction is the same thing and works across partitions as well

Sorry, junctions are *not* the same thing.

Everything you delete in a junction is deleted in all folders. I have lost data because of that.

While in a "hardlinked folder" deleting or moving or even renaming files doesn't affect the other folders (and still doesn't take extra space).
I've used this countless times to organize and sort files and folders, especially if the harddisk space is to small to have actual copies on the partition. Also it's way quicker to hardlink than to copy.

Also you didn't address the question if you changed something or know why the behaviour is changed. I assúme you put the warning message in X2, so you know what's going on. Please restore it to the previous behaviour if you can.

FWIW, I've always used Link Shell Extension from the context menu instead of X²'s native linking in Windows. It's always been just a bit more robust than the one in X² for me.

Thanks John. I use LSE (and dupemerge from the same author), too.

But it's so much quicker and more convenient to copy/paste with Ctrl-C and Ctrl-Alt-H
