Version 6 changes default layout on me and I do not know why

Post by otlaolap »

Version 6 keeps changing the default layout on me. I use various layouts, and often have more than one copy of X2 running, starting them with the /P option and with the /S option to specify separate processes and different layouts. "Save settings on exit" is set to no. Yet often, starting with V6, when I have shut everything down I will find "[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\ZabaraKatranemia Plc\xplorer2_UC.global]" value "szDefLayout" changed on exit -- from its initial state as blank to a random one of the layouts I specified with the /S option when starting one of the copies of X2. X2 should not be changing this value because (a) I've said not to and (b) I've done nothing that I know of to change any X2 default value while running this sequence of operations. My recourse here is to delete the registry and restore it from a backup, but the problem recurs. None of the auxiliary programs I run contains the character string "szDefLayout" (in fact none contains "DefLay").

What has changed and, short of restoring the registry (or at least stomping this one value) before starting any X2 work, what can I do?

The last (non-default) layout (see WINDOW menu) will be used when xplorer² restarts, even without /S: command line switch.

Thanks for the quick explanation, but possibly not for the change. What does "save settings on exit - no" actually mean? At least, though, I wasn't nuts and hadn't done something to mess things up. And I'll find a way to add just a few more lines of code to my auxiliary support routines to put this back right for my use of X2. In any case, thanks as always for the superior product.

if you want NO settings saved whatsoever, please use MGAO3_NOSAVEGLOBAL (available from advanced settings editor)

Now nikos, we've spoken about this before - when you're out in public you have to at least try and pretend to speak like a real boy, not the animatronic automaton you aspire to be. That kind of thing just makes the neighbours nervous.

So, in normal-human-talk that would be:

Tools -> Advanced Options -> Global -> Extra Options -> Don't save global options either

Note that the imaginatively named "extra options" comes after the similarly imaginatively named "more options" section. Or you can just search for the text "either" which is easier.

I will release an update tomorrow where /S:default command line option will make sure the default layout is used

Then I'm my belt-and-suspenders way I will add this option to my startup commands in addition to the already implemented registry patching [insert smiley here]. Thanks, Nikos.
