Unable to enable enable "look in folder" area in M

Post by mheavin »

I would like to be able to mark files that match a criteria in the current directory and its sub-directories to delete accumulated backup files. When I use Alt-G to display the Mark dialog, I can mark files in the current directory, but not in any sub-directories. I cannot find any way to enable the folder widgets at the top of the dialog.

What am I missing?

Thanx,
Mike

Alt-G is only supposed to use files from the current folder (or better: the current pane. See remark about its use further down this post in combination with a scrap pane).

I think you can achieve your goal the following way. I presume you want to select the backup files by specifying an extension, such as .bak? I also assume you want to delete all these files. Then the way to go is this:

1. Navigate to the top of the folder hierarchy you want to examine
2. Use Ctrl+F to get to the search dialog
3. specify .bak in the Named field. Hit enter
4. In the scrap pane you'll see the results of the search (all .bak files in the folder hierarchy)
5. Use Ctrl+A to select all files (check to see if they are all files you want to delete!!)
6. From the File menu choose: File|Delete :!: this is essential, since hitting the Del key simply removes the items from the scrap pane, but doesn't delete anything from the file system!

After this all selected files are gone!

You can even refine this operation using the many possibilities of narrowing down the selection via another search in the scrap pane (or using Alt+G dialog) or using the duplicate files checker from the Tools menu (Tools|Check Duplicates. The options are many :)

It's just for these kind of operations on files that X2 shows its real potential. Please explore them, you'll like it ;)
Dumb questions are the ones that are never asked :turn:
