Great program!

Post by wavy c »

Hi all - I'm using xplorer2 lite and just wanna say a big tnx to Nikos for developing it. :D

I've tried a lot of file managers and this is the best I've found by far. And I include the 'biggies' - like Total Cmdr and Powerdesk - in that list (ok, TC is powerful but its non-standard commands make it a dog for everyday use imho). I've also got to include 2xExplorer (xplorer's forerunner). Kept it installed, but am afraid rarely used it as I found the system of navigating by being in a folder pane and clicking on the tree was awkward (always seemed to be in the wrong pane when clicking the tree!). Also, I applaud your decision to dump all those bottom toolbar buttons in the new xplorer2 - I could never remember what they were for and they only made the program look confusing. Xplorer 2 is much cleaner.

In xplorer2, I normally just have the two folder panes open, and have added the tree display button to the button bar for easy access. Works great!

So what do I think are xplorer2's best features? Well I gotta say it has to be the way u can navigate by clicking in each pane's title bar. Haven't seen this used before anywere, and it is a brilliant innovation. Combined with a left click on the title bar for history (and the bookmarks feature), it makes finding your way around your computer a breeze.

What would I like to see in future versions? The size of the current folder displayed in the status bar at the bottom. Maybe it could replace the existing 'free space on this drive' display? (although that's useful too). It's not a major thing as I just go up a level and hit properties to see the total size.
And what about making a 'bookmarks' button available for the toolbar (similar to the 'views' button).

Have installed xplorer on both an xp desktop computer and an aging win98 laptop and it works fine on both.

:!: There is one little issue I should mention. My win98 laptop normally has drives mapped as C:, D: for the hdd and E: as the cd drive. When I plug a camera flash card into PCMCIA card slot, it normally became drive F: (the next empty drive available). For some reason, after installing xplorer2, pluging in the flashcard when windows is running crashes the computer. Now I gotta have it plugged in before booting, and then it appears as drive E: (normally the cd) and the cd drive becomes F:. Afterwards, I can dismount it normally etc.

This is not a major issue for me, and I'm more curious than anything else. Of course, it is also entirely possible that this anomoly may NOT in fact be related to xplorer2 - but I only noticed it after installing.

Anyway, tnx again for releasing this great program as freeware :D It knocks spots of everything else out there (except, perhaps, the pro version which I haven't tried yet ;-) )

lol. The drive thing is just something I thought I'd mention in case u had come across it before. In fairness, it may not even be related to xplorer2. And yes, it only happened on win98 - xp continues to run as normal. I guess it's always possible that, even though I hadn't installed any other programs, that some other minor change to my setup might be to blame.

Also - after mentioning that I'd like to see the folder size displayed in the status bar, I've noticed you answered in another thread that this might add a performance overhead. If so, then much better to keep it as it is. I love the way xplorer2 is small and fires up quickly. This is one of its big plus points. I appreciate the speed every time I use it while I'd only occassionally use the folder size display! Anyway, I didn't know at the time about hitting Ctl-D - very useful - and, besides, its not a big deal to hit the properties button to get a folder's size.

Again, I think xplorer 2 is a really excellent little program. The more I use the navigation system in the pane title bars (where u click upper levels of the path to move there) the more I like it. It’s a really fast and efficient way to move around.

kind regards

:D
