xplorer2 stays in memory after closing?

Post by jimspoon »

Just thought I'd pass along this message posted in alt.comp.freeware - anybody have an answer?

"I really like xplorer2 lite, but unfortunately I have had to uninstall
it because I keep having a problem with the program not unloading
properly when it is closed. Often after exiting xplorer2 my system
(WinXP Pro) slows down noticeably, and when I open the Task Manager I
will find the program still listed in the processes window. Forcing an
End Process restores the system to normal. Several days ago my
computer slowed to a crawl - even just opening the Start menu took
many seconds. When I checked the Task Manager I found 2 instances of
xplorer2 running, even though the program was not open at the time.
Again, I had to End Process (twice) to get rid of them. Have any other
users seen this behavior? Interestingly, I occasionally had this same
problem with 2xExplorer, but it happened much less frequently.

This does not happen under Windows 2000 SP4 or at least for me it doesn't. Sounds like a virus scanner problem or bad shell extension.

xplorer2 stays in memory after closing?

Post by john p. »

nikos,

"i can't find this post in google groups"

That's because, for all its faults, Google at least respects and honors X-No-Archive headers. I will re-install xplorer2 and try to track the occurence of this problem.

ckit,

"Sounds like a virus scanner problem or bad shell extension."

Why in the world would my anti-virus app keep a non-related program in memory, and why only these two programs?

thanks john

while you are at it, i would appreciate if you "installed" the debug german version from:
http://www.ps.ic.ac.uk/~umeca74/x2german.zip
(if you delete the dll file included in the package it will forget all its german in an instant :))

also grab dbmon & debugging instructions from
http://www.ps.ic.ac.uk/~umeca74/dbmon.zip

if you put everything in a single folder and run dbmon first we'll hopefully get to see what's going on

if this debug version doesn't work for you (e.g. due to licencing) i'll make a fresh debug LITE version for you

any other file managers you've ever used that are also misbehaving like that? I would be prepared to understand why x2 gets stuck but as you say 2x does it too which makes no sense!

thanks for your help!
