how to load xplorer2 with your layout...yes you can

Post by diagg »

hello,
i 'm just new to xplorer2, i found it not that bad, he is fast, very fast (try ExplorerXp to see what i mean...) and so small, yes this one is for me. The bad point (in my opinion) is the crapy interface when it come to save time : useless tree view, no buttons near windows to fastly select a drive, common tasks should be placed between the 2 panes instead of taskbar to save time and useless kilometers mouse movements...

The customisation of he interface help to save some time, but it did not solve every desagremants and it have a major problem : it load a second Xplorer to show your customisations... (maybe that's why it's called Xplorer2... just jocking...sorry)

that's where i come with this post, i've found a way to load xplorer2 with your custome configuration. here is the trick :

- Make your own layout
- Save it (Windows>save layout)
- Close the app
- use some registy editor and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ZabaraKatranemia Plc\
- open it and find a folder key called : xplorer2_UC."NameOfYourSavedLayout"
- save that key-rep
- also go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ZabaraKatranemia Plc\xplorer2_UC."NameOfYourSavedLayout"\MainFrame Settings\Toolbars
- save the key-rep
- go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ZabaraKatranemia Plc\xplorer2_UC\MainFrame Settings\Toolbars
- Delete the key-rep
- Edite the to reg files you saved with note pad and replace every xplorer2_UC."NameOfYourSavedLayout" by xplorer2_UC
- save the modified reg files
- click on reg files to install then in the registry
- launch xplorer2
- Et voila...

if someone is good at scripting, then make it for the guys that are not familiar with the registry

thank

diagg,

It should not have to be that complicated.
After you get your views all set up, simply use
Actions | Save settings now
To save setup in current "key"(layout)

Also, it sounds like you either
a. have the option unchecked for
Tools | Options /General\ Save program state on exit
or
b. you generally browse media files with QuickViewer and you have WMP 9.0 installed, which prevents proper shutdown of x2 (so it won't save state on exit as intended)

A "fix" for "b." will soon be generally available (almost finished testing).

[edit - deleted erroneous observation about /S commandline switch {operator error} ]

diagg, rest assured there's no conspiracy here, the demo works as well as the paid job, i bet you've been stung by the wmp9 bug; check your task manager you must have a hung xplorer2 process

fred, i just checked /S and it works as advertised on win2000

sure, there's no conspiracy... :D, maybe something in my system is wrong. I don't understand : i don't have any quickview, hung xplorer process nor WMP9 (i'm using the 6.4) maybe some services i have disabled...

anyway, if don't know where is the bug, i found a way to solve it for me, maybe i'll have more luck in my next windows re-install :?

thank everyone

keep on doing it small and fast

nikos,
re: faulty /S switch report
I was inarush this morning & didn't do an operator-error double-check on myself.
It turns out that the saved key I was using as a test case had an undetected trailing space in its "name "; so when I used what I thought was it's "name" on the commandline I got the defaults, although I could pick it correctly from the layouts listed in the x2 Window menu.

The issue of spaces in the layout/key names brings up a point worth mentioning again: the perennial need to surround commandline arguments with doublequotes when parametervalues contain space(s) which will otherwise be parsed as a delimiter.
