xplorer2 is a great application. It is fast, stable, usable. I've been using it for 6 months and never needed the classic WinXP Explorer. But like every other great application i think it lacks of some features.

http://www.explorerxp.com/ is another file manager application. It has some great and new features. The greatest feature is TABS. You can open any number of tabs as you want. This provides a greater accessibility to any folder you want, and also dual view is history, because you can open 2+ tabs at once and tile them horizontally/vertically. This is what i wait for years.

It also has GROUPS feature that you can group folders and open them with one click.

But of course it is not as fast as xplorer2 :) In fact, no file manager is as fast as xplorer2.

If xplorer2 has these TABS and GROUPS features, it will be the greatest application on the market.

Regards.....

Nikos is taking a vacation till October, and till that time we can expect him to only occasionally visits these forums.

The tabs feature is already slated for development in the very next phase. However, I can't say if it will be there in the Lite version.

Note, though, that tabs are more useful when the application has a single folder-pane (apart from the folder tree pane). In fact, that's how single-pane explorers try to provide a dual-pane functionality. So a dual-pane application already has a more powerful GUI.

In fact, tabs in a dual-pane application like x2 present new issues: there, a tab would have to represent two folders at a time.

For example,
Tab 1 has folders A and B loaded
Tab 2 has folders C and D loaded

How would you transfer some items from C to A? The normal F5/F6 can't work across tabs.

Also note that tabs in a dual-pane explorer make history chain management difficult.

BTW you can already make unlimited groups of folders in x2 (but in the PRO version). Any folder can be added to any group. In other words, a folder can be part of multiple groups. This trick uses scrap pane, which is not available in the Lite version.

Truly virtual groups of folders will be implemented in a future version of x2. But that too would be in the PRO version only..

Tabs *might* be a nice extra, and as stated above are already on the to-do list for a future version of xplorer2 - but I do hope they won't impact on this great program's speed and ease of use.

To me, it seems there is a fine balance between features and performance and Nikos already appears to have got it just about right.

Most people, I suspect, mostly fire up xplorer to locate a file and then, run, read, copy, move or delete it. The two-window file manager already handles these tasks with ease. Xplorer is especially good because of the ease of changing directories (via the history lists and ability to click on higher up folders on each window's title bar). For those other odd times when you need multiple folders open, it is not difficult to open another instance of xplorer and move your files around that way.

There are already plenty of other programs with useless bloat such as skins and other rarely-used but resource-hungry add-ons.

I would hate to see xplorer go down that road - much better to concentrate on optomising and refining what is already excellent. I'm voting to keep it *lite*!

I hope so, Nikos! That'd be so awesome! :D To be honest, I'm looking over at ExplorerXP myself, and while it's not as powerful as xplorer2 Lite, it's a neat little application. (I like that it doesn't hide anything.)
