Duplicates selection

Post by Gandolf »

Can selecting Content automatically select Size? If I want to compare the contents of files I would expect them to be of the same size, so this would save one mouse click!! I cannot conceive a situation where files could have the same contents, but be of different sizes. Tests I have done with and without size selected show this would make the compare by contents faster (considerably in some cases).

that's true but sometimes one wants to use a subset of "identity" characteristicks, e.g. just same names

Yes, nikos, sometimes.
But I often want to compare files for content which have different names.
In this case, my first check is whether sizes are the same, & second check is checksum match.
(Yet, countrary to Gandolf's experience, I have frequently had occurences of same-size files being different.)
So I would like to see the Ctrl+F9 synchronization option to be expanded and clarified for
Select items that are: [x] Identical
to have choices for
Comparisons based on name and:
( ) Modification date
( ) File content
( ) Name only

Comparisons based only on:
(•) File content

Yes, I know I can get that functionality with duplcates checker in a single scrap pane. But that involves more effort, plus the neeed to be familiar with scrappane operation; while the above suggestion is an intuitive usage.

but this will complicate the ctrl+f9 dialog with irrelevant options for the main job, difference checking

As I have pointed out before, the dialog anyway needs some corrections, because it lets the user choose some non-compatible options.

I too had suggested that CTRL+F9 should have a provision to ignore the directory structure and compare the items directly. (In this I differ from what Fred has suggested.)

When there issues are considered together, they should trigger a re-design of this dialog box!
