New installation of xplorer2 won't run.

Post by RGB »

I have used xplorer2 lite on another computer and liked it, so I downloaded it on my own system. Installation appeared to be successful, icons present, files all seem to be there. Clicking the icon does nothing. Tried run command line, no luck. The Start|program files| route does not work either. No error messages when installing or when trying to launch program. O/S is Win98, no other known problems. I really want to get this going, because it looks like a great program.

There is no sound at all. When the icon is clicked, the hourglass "wait" symbol displays very briefly, then disappears. Sorry, I don't know what the task manager is or how to look at it.

Wait, I remembered something about the task manager. RUN taskman, right? When I do that, nothing shows up in the list of tasks.

Does it have this TAB on win98 Nikos? (I don't have any Win98 installation any more, so can't check, but I believe this is something which requires Win2000 and above??)

Win98's taskmanager is somewhat rudimentary :?
Dumb questions are the ones that are never asked :turn:

In Win98, you can get to the task manager by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete.

As JRz mentions, it is nowhere near as good as the one in WinXP and Win2K.

RGB,
As you can see there are many folks here on the board who want to help you figure this out.

Can you give us a little more information about your machine OS veriosn and other apps that you are running?

Some things that MIGHT give a clue towards problem solution are:
* How up-to-date are you with w98? (microsoft has pulled the support plug)
* What version of Internet Explorer & Windows Media Player are installed?
* Did xplorer² (x2) ever work after initial install, but then not later?
(& if so, will it work when you turn your computer ON; but then not be able to re-start after you close x2 ? )

For your information, I run x2 (Pro &/or Lite) with no problems on an old win98 classic clunker with no significant problems (& there are others who also do so successfully, too) -- so if you are willing to dialog on this with us, I am sure we can isolate the problem & resolve it.

Thanks for all the responses, guys.
The o/s is Win98 (original, not SE).
Internet Explorer 6.0.26
Windows media player 7.01.00.3055 Why is this important? I have had some problems lately with WMP not playing CD's ("Path not found").
Also running in the background: Zonealarm (firewall); AVG (antivirus); BoClean (trojan detector). I had all 3 of these deactivated when I installed x2. I have since uninstalled and reinstalled x2, but it still does not work.
x2 has never run successfully on this PC.
The PC on which I first saw x2 lite working had exactly the same version of Win98 installed. I know this, because I installed it myself.
The task manager list obtained with ctrl+alt+delete does not contain any reference to x2.

we reached a dead end
first try a simple test: run x2, and then use explorer to delete the executable, xplorer2.exe

(if that fails it means that x2 is running but has no gui)
(i don't think it is possible either!)

if that doesn't tell us anything then the only option is for me to send you a special debug version that will tell us what breaks. You'll have to download and install Dependency Walker too

please let me know if you are interested

nikos:
I "ran" x2, or at least attempted to, then deleted the exe file with no problems. So the program may not even be starting. Some initial condition it is looking for on startup is not being met. Would the program normally give some kind of general failure message if a problem is encountered shortly after launching?

I am willing to try the debug version. This problem has really got me curious now. Besides, it will be worth it if I can get x2 running.

I first started looking for two-panel software like x2 because I know I will soon have to upgrade to WinXP. I have been using an ancient DOS version of Norton Commander for years and it has served me well, but it will not run under XP, so I need a replacement for it. x2 will probably run fine after I upgrade to XP, but I am not ready to upgrade yet and would like to become accustomed to x2 now, because it may be very useful for sorting things out both before and after the upgrade. It appears to be far more powerful than my old Norton Commander.
