I use 1&1 and it only allows passive FTP. I came into the same problem awhile ago, but then I used the passive FTP option and it worked. I know this is the same problem because it's the same error message.
Please help, xplore2 is great, but if I can't use it with FTP, then I'll need to find a new file manager.
Also, is there any way to hide the password?

i access 1&1 (UK server site) through FTP all the time
can you get into it using IE?
have a look at the advanced internet options in IE
some of them pertain to ftp, you may need to relax them a little
unfortunately nothing can be done about hiding passwords
however, even the "secure" mode of IE is totally cobblers since you can get a program like protected storage explorer and see all the passwords unencrypted!
