Looks like Incompatibility between Xplorer2 & Norton Pro

Post by rumsfeld »

This post follows up on  "Blue Screens on Incremental Searches.

Further attempts to evaluate xplorer 2 led to some hard blue screens, as opposed to the intermittent ones first noticed.

They all begin with exception 00 in VxD Nprotect(01) + 00002bea.  Next I get a fatal exception 0d at 169:017775b6.  The program terminates, and I get back to the desktop.  But sometimes I got more exceptions, Windows crashes, and I have to ipl the system.

I decided that I would like to change to program to always begin with my computer.

I then noticed the blue screens consistently happening when starting xplorer2 from the desktop shortcut from the installation.  I discovered that it had the start in directory set to subdirectory snap of the program directory.  I changed the start in directory to the program directory itself and this particular crash stopped.  The snap directory had a number of .png and .gif files that looked like they were part of the help system.   This didn't make a lot of sense.  Presumably the installation set the start in directory to snap for a reason.  But changing it did clear one kind of hard crash.

After getting my computer working as the initial display, I decided to uncheck the save program state setting on exit so I would always start at my computer.  I thought this might reduce my problems.  However, it had just the opposite effect.  I got a series of hard consistent blue screens just from unchecking the box on the dialog box.  I couldn't get the box to uncheck without bringing down the system.  Just unchecking the box did something that Norton Protection didn't like.

I thought the program stored everything in the registry.  If it wrote an .ini file, I could see Nprotect not liking something about how it was written, but why would updating registry keys upset Nprotect?

Leaving the save program state setting alone, I tried restarting the program only to discover more crashes trying to exit the program.  Several times, I would successfully start and exit the program without doing anything, and then repeat the exercise only to see the system crash.

I turned Norton protection off and things seemed to work.  I didn't get any crashes with it off.  Something is making sense here.  That seemed to eliminate some other possible sources of conflict, including my MS DOS ramdisk.

I started xplorer 2 with Norton Protection off and was able to uncheck the save the program state on exit.

I turned Norton protection back on.

I got fewer crashes but continued to get some just starting the program and browsing files.  The though then occurred to me that maybe opening to My Computer contributes to the problems.

I turned Norton protection off and opened xplorer 2 turned save program state back on.  I set it to my c drive and then turned save program state back off.

I then turned Norton protection on.

Since then, I have been able to consistently open and close xplorer 2, doing nothing.  That's as far as I have got.

The incompatibility seems related somehow to saving the system state and displaying my computer.

I never had quick view on.

i can't imagine what can be wrong
the only certainty is that x2 saves all its settings in the registry, so this ntprotect must be monitoring it (registry in the end of the day is a file)
