Searching CAB files

Post by ricmarte »

I installed the cab IFilter from Citeknet  http://www.citeknet.com/.

However, I can't find a file I know is in a Cab file.  I can browse the cab file with WinRAR but I can't seem to search within it using X2.

Has anyone been successful in searching within cab files using the IFilters?

Yep.  xx09.  I can search within zip files with the Ifilter for zips.  However, I cannot do so for cabs.

By the way, I am on the look out for a FREEware rar Ifilter.  I've seen some for over $100.  If anyone comes across such a filter, please feel free to send me the link.

Thanks!

$100 for rar? that's such a steal since the unrar dll is free and to tack a filter on it must be 1 hours work tops! Ok make it 1 day. I've seen some paranormal prices for many tools built on text filters, e.g. pdf searching apps for >$100. Am I in the wrong business or what? :)

i'll look into the cab thing

on cabs: looks like the "plugin" is half-broken
for some cabs it returns nothing, for others it just returns contained filenames, and for yet others it returns names+some text!

Thanks for looking into this.  I will let the plugins author know about cab filter.

Yeah, the price for the rar ifilter is a bit ridiculous.  I thought of converting my .rar files to zip but it is not worth it at this point.  I think I will wait for a FREE rar ifilter.  In fact, I should e-mail the folks at rarlabs and see if they have any plans of releasing such a plugin.

By the way, adding support for ifilters was a great move!  It makes it convenient to search for files.  Perhaps somewhere down the line, rar files may be treated as folders much like zip files are.  Then there won't be a need to launch WinRar to view a rar file.

Thanks, again.

i have a plan for a stand-alone super-search tool that among other things will be capable of entering into all kinds of archives. More on that in the near future
