I'm sorry about this but I am new to this forum BUT not new to computers (30 years). I could not locate the option to post a new message on a new thread. That's my first question

I am having trouble naming a newly created folder in Explorer-2. The new folder is created but then it will not rename.

A. The (newtopic) and the (postreply) buttons are at top & bottom of each thread (a.k.a.: topic) on this style board -- not within each message block.

B. Both rename techniques should work, unless the folder pathname is locked -- such as from haveing an item open within it.

I presume you have create privilege for the containing folder, or you wouldn't even get the folder [New Folder] which you want to rename.
How about with Windows Explorer? Can you rename the folder with it?

I have admin access. The new folder is empty and focus is on another folder.

Explorer does rename and delete it. Explorer-2 does not.

Can you rename other items (files, folders) with xplorer2 ?
Does it matter where they are in the directory (folder) structure?
What is your operating system & version?

Doesnt seem to matter where they are, I cannot rename a file or a folder. The act of right clicking and clicking on rename, causes the warning sound.

I can delete folders and files, however

I have never heard of this problem with xplorer².
Please tell us what version of xplorer² you have installed.
(on menu: Help | About xplorer² )
and what is your operating system & version ?
(does it meet the min requirements for xplorer² ? - see FAQ #A2 )

My last thought was that either your system configuration did not support xplorer² ... or that maybe you were not running xplorer² at all,
because you had referred twice to Explorer-2 (not the usual reference of either xplorer2 or x2, for short)
... but I see that must have been just a 'typo' (what's the chance that another app would have current version number "1.4.0.1")

Next questions are:
Are you running any other shell namespace extension(s)/customization(s) besides regular Windows Explorer?
Have you done any registry tweaking upon installation of x2 ?
(& if so, what have you tried ? )
Have you tried to uninstall/reinstall xplorer² ?

The Explorer-2 name was because I didnt know how to enter an exponent here

Yes, of course, I have tweaked the registry but nothing that would relate to this app.

This is not a fatal problem because I can always rename in DOS or in Windows explorer if I have to. It is a bit of a pain tho.

While lack of renaming capability may not be a 'fatal problem' for you it is an indication that something is wrong - and it certainly detracts from your efficiency when using x2.
So ... I suggest that you do an uninstall/reinstall to see if that fixes the problem.

- (almost) nobody does: preferring to just say x2 or xplorer2
... but if you really want to bother, it's basically the old DOS keyboard 'trick' for extended characters: hold down ALT while typing the ascii (decimal) character code for the character, then release ALT --- except in windoze you must type 4 digits instead of just 3. Because the exponent 2 is ascii char(178) it can be entered as ALT+0,1,7,8
(Note that you must use the keypad numerals for this to work -- not the number keys on the top row above the alphabet characters on the keyboard.)

hi tenbob, we might be overlooking the obvious here...
Are you trying to rename a folder in the tree in the leftmost pane??

Because that would explain why you can't rename the folder. The file pane probably shows the contents of the folder you are trying to rename. This also implies that this folder is being browsed by X², thus effectively blocking actions as renaming or deleting. Just go on folder up in the hierarchy and rename using the folder shown in the file pane (one of) the right side pane(s) in X²

Does this solve your problem?

Actually, I had thought that might be the case, except ...
when I tested it I found that I could rename the active folder from the tree.
(and I have the Don't lock browsed folder option unchecked)
I was also successful renaming a folder in x2 when viewing its content in winExplorer, and vice versa.
So I didn't discuss whether the renaming attempt was from the tree pane or otherwise.

But, Jan, if that's something both you and tenbob experience, it may be a particular combination of user preference settings that I have not found. :shock:

These last two posts fixed the problem for me BUT I could only rename (and/or delete) the new folder only from the leftmost tree pane but not from the pane in which I created it. There were no files in it.

I was able to select another folder to show it in the file pane and THEN I could rename or delete that new folder. I was unable to delete or rename a NEW FOLDER when in the file pane itself.

Thanks for all the help from everyone who posted to this inquiry about Xplorer²

Bob,
It sounds like it's still not working as it should for you.
Perhaps there is something obvious that mere words have not conveyed.
Let me walk through a mouse-free keystroke sequence that should work
(my apologies if this seems pedantic :roll: ).

Setup: Dual folder panes plus tree pane, with
- Tree pane on left showing folders in heirarchical 'tree'
- Inactive folder pane in center showing content of any folder.
- Active folder pane on right showing any other folder in which you have create permission.
(use "Tab" to toggle which pane is "active")

Hit F8
- this should create and select a folder named New Folder in the Active pane.
With the temporary name New Folder still highlighted, and without touching the mouse, type the folder name you want (e.g.: NewStuff) and hit Enter.

The newly created folder should be renamed to NewStuff.

If that doesn't work, something is wrong.

Please let us know.

No problem about pedantic

Followed instructions very carefully and found a strange result

Left - Tree pane Center- a folder Right pane another folder
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

F8 created a new folder in center - could not rename it. Cursor moved to line started by first character of potential rename. Delete did work here

Moved to right pane
f8 created another folder- here the rename worked fine, and also delete
