I save all my working files to a zip drive. However I'm always worried that my computer will irretrievably breakdown making it difficult to recall what software I had installed.

Is there any way that 2xExplorer and its current map of what is installed on a particular machine can be saved to a floppy or zip drive so that you know what you had installed if the machine breaks down?

i'm not sure if that's what you want but to move 2x to a different computer (or to guard against failures) all you need is the executable itself and the registry key that the program keeps its settings. See registry.txt for more information

If my hard drive fails, I would like to know what software I had installed so that I can eventually get a new drive set up similar to the original.

It would be useful therefore if the information that 2xExplorer had established (ie its map of the whole machine) on its last operation, could be saved at the end of a session.

If the hard drive then fails, you have a saved copy of 2xExplorer which can be run on another computer to see the map of the previous machine. Of course, 2xExplorer, would have to avoid conflict with the computer it is running on.

Whether this can be done or not is the point of the query.

If not then perhaps the only other way a map of the whole machine can be saved is, every so often, use 'print screen' for successive sections of the directory, put the print screen images into a word processing document, save it onto a floppy or zip, so that the document can be viewed on another machine should the hard drive on the original machine fail.

2xExplorer doesn't know anything about your system, it only remembers the last 50 or so folders you've visited

what you are after is some utility that does a backup of your system just in case things go pear-shaped. I never need to do backup myself (our system admin takes care of that), but i'm sure there are tons of tools out there -- checkout my links page in the website
