OS is Vista Home Premium. xplorer2 lite regularly crashes when opening. The following message appears in event log:
Faulting application xplorer2_lite.exe, version 1.7.0.5, time stamp 0x46d3cff9, faulting module MSONSEXT.DLL, version 11.0.6715.60, time stamp 0x43306199, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x00053555, process id 0x1fc0, application start time 0x01c86832067fcf00.
The only other observation I can offer is that I had firefox open when xplorer repeatedly crashed. Every attempt to open xplorer failed until I closed firefox and waited about 10secs before opening xplorer. I have noticed in the past the xplorer crashed when opened soon after firefox was closed. Is this coincidence???

this report implies that what crashes is this MSONSEXT.DLL not xplorer2 itself. If you get me a dr watson crash log (see www.zabkat.com/x2cs_bug.htm) i will tell you more

http://www.clausbrod.de/cgi-bin/view.pl ... ic20070630
then send me the crash dump file
note it is huge so zip and upload to rapidshare.com or something similar
thanks

i have looked at this and it seems that this DLL (looks like something from MS office) is crashing while x2 tries to extract some icon. How far does it get, do you see any window at all before the crash?
from what you say, it doesn't crash all the time, have you seen any pattern?
have you tried the pro version yet?
also try turning off background threads using the registry settings editor and see if it helps:
