xplorer2 'scratch' functionality

Post by ironhead »

Hey,

I can't seem to get the shred functionality working in the latest xplorer2. Every time I try, I get a 'write error'. Is there some safety mechanism I need to enable / disable?

Thanx!

It happens every time. I highlight the file, then go to the menu and click 'Actions > Shred" and in the status bar on the bottom I get "Write error, shredding aborted".

I'm using Windows XP Professional with all the latest service packs/patches applied on a Dell Latitude laptop.

I've run the dbmon utility to see if it could shed any light on what's going on. I get the following:

1068: Frame_405ee handling command 32800
1068: Thread fd0 pump: unrecognized message 49352 ignored

The last line appears everytime I make the xplorer2 window active. I'm guessing it has something to do with the fact that I don't have the floppy installed at the moment (fd0?).

Let me know if there is something else you'd like me to try.

I'm running .42, and the 'shred' worked for one file. Now it's not again. :(

Using Db_Mon, I now get:

1264: Frame_3d04e6 handling command 32800
1264: Thread 5ec pump: unrecognized message 49333 ignored

again, the 'Thread 5ec pump: unrecognized message 49333 ignored' message appears everytime the xplorer2 window becomes active. Not sure if it's related or not.

I did a little more testing....

Shredding individual files and groups of files is fine. When I attempt to shred a directory (empty or not), it gives the write error. Guess this brings up the question, is shredding a directory even possible?

Hrmmm.... K

It seems it's actually only directories in the Recycle Bin, as I've just done some test shreadding on other directories and it worked fine.

So, not a big deal (well done on fixing it ) , if you could get it so I could shred my complete Recycle Bin, it would be much appreciated (it's kind of a nice security / privacy feature).

Cheers!

i am amazed that you can shred files in the bin in the first place!
recycle bin mangles the names so x2 has trouble locating the real files
i'd recommend either restoring the folders first or accessing the bin
from its real filesystem folder (c:\recycled etc). Perhaps that will help

PS: on second thought that won't work either. x2 sees all items in the bin as "files" so it will be attempting to shred a folder using commands that are only applicable to files. So it's back to square 1 and you'll have to restore folders first...

Don't suppose there is a way to determine file / directory size in the recycle bin and simply do a raw write to disk where the data is stores? I'm guesssing this is pretty much what 'shred' does. If so, is there not similar functions to determine the size / location of files / directories in the recycle bin?

Either way, thanx again for the fix!!!! :D
