2X Folder Data-Ctrl+D gives DING on C:\

Post by burale »

I'm trying to get Folder Data for my 20 GB HDD so I can use [F3] and write it to a text file for subsequent comparisons.

Using Win2K SP4 with NTFS file system if relevant.

I used to do this once a week on a smaller 4GB HDD on my older system and it worked fine.

If I try it on a much smaller folder (eg C:\Temp) the popup window appears almost immediately and shows what I'm expecting.

Watching the folders being opened in Process Explorer (from SysInternals) I can see folders and subfolders being opened and closed - it seems to get just so far, then rings the bell and quits.

Is this a known problem and is there any workaround?

In the hope that it might work in xplorer2 I d/l'd 0.44 but don't see equivalent functionality there unless its implicit in the the special window handling which I confess I haven't even begun to comprehend yet :?

the only thing i can think of is you ran out of memory... but it is unlikely. Perhaps you have a weird folder in there somewhere, probably in c:\winnt; try a ctrl+D in there to see if you can pin-point it

xplorer2 doesn't have a folder data command yet, only a command <Alt+D> that calculates subfolder sizes and lists them when in detailed view

Folder Data - maybe its Hard Links?

I tried it in SafeMode - fell over. Doing all Winnt worked OK though.

Is it possible that hard links / junctions could be causing this problem. I'm pretty sure its not an actual circular refernce sub-folder directly or indirectly hard linkled to parent but I do have all Start-Programs and QuickLaunch folders hardlinked to another folder and all PDF's hard linked to a folder in My Documents.

I think all the PDF's would simply get double counted but maybe the shortcut folders are causing a problem?

btw: I seem to get a lot of "Cannot find page-maybe busy" errors trying to post here. Is your host having problems?

perhaps; you can try a Ctrl+D in the folder you have junctions and see how it goes. The command is too suspicious for its own good and it is clearly over-reacting on some error code

the forum has had its ups & downs recently, but i am on the "other side" of the world so i couldn't know what's wrong!
