The following may sound basic, but then we don't know your experience  level.

You must be pressing some keys by mistake. Once you press F8 you are not supposed to press tabs, arrows, etc.

Rather than words, let us take the visual approach: The User manual has a few screenshots. See if your experience is exactly the same:

1. Page 91 describes how F8 looks like.
2. Page 113 (individual renaming) shows what controls can be used while naming/renaming. You may be pressing one of those keys while you are in certain pane (but not in the other).

(If you don't have version 1.4.0.0-2, delete the x2docs.pdf from the installation folder of x2 and press F1 in x2. This will automatically download the latest version from the website. )

BTW the official nomenclature for all parts of the GUI is provided on p. 21. There is no need to fumble for the most correct term! ;)

**********
If you are sure that you are not pressing anything, but yet are getting these results, then click in the left folder pane (what you are calling "middle pane")  and press CTRL+ALT+I. This will load the same folder as the other pane. Now press F8. Since you have the same folder in both panes, you should get identical results in both panes.

another reason why folder creation may fail is that you may not have permission to write in a folder. E.g security settings, read-only media etc

As to my experience:   in 1978 I bought my first computer  IMSAI 8080 witn 16K memory and one 64K disk drive.     I programmed my bookeeping for my existing business, then sold the business and became a professional (?) programmer in  DBase II, then DataFlex for small  businesses. During the period, I wrote computer help and reviews for three magazines that are now defunct.  Retired in 1990 and just have fun now.
-----------------------------------
I used the ctrl/alt/I and then put a new folder in both witn F8. The LeftFolder Pane  would not rename and the right panel pane would rename.   Both would delete.   I am the sole operator of this machine with admin privileges.   After the F8, I pressed no positional keys and just tried to rename.

Sir, with an experience like that, this is like showing a lamp to the Sun! :)
Of course you wouldn't press any undesired keys!

If the folder cannot be renamed in only one of the panes, the properties should show the reason for it. (select the same folder in both panes and press F12). Compare all properties, in all the three tabs.

It appears as if the panes belong to different users, with different privileges!  :?

so what's the difference  between your left-right panes?
perhaps one is in details and the  other in thumbnails or something?

Hi tenbob,

This might be a silly suggestion, but if a pane has the column "Full Name" rather than "Name" then a folder can be created, it cannot be renamed, but it can be deleted. Rename gives the error message in the status bar. Is the column setup you have the difference between right and left panes?

Good thinking!

tenbob, press ALT+K in both panes and see which columns you are using.
